Alaskans looking for spring and summer employment have plenty of opportunity to find work in the seafood processing industry. The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development says that seafood processing employers are recruiting for more than 1,800 full-time, temporary seafood workers for the 2021 salmon season and other fishery seasons.
Many employers offer transportation and room and board for those who successfully complete their work contract. Jobs begin as early as mid-April and can last up to six months. Alaskans looking for work in the seafood processing industry can consider openings in the more than 15 Alaska locations, whether shore-based, on board floating processors, or at-sea processing ships.
Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Dr. Tamika Ledbetter said, “The seasonal seafood processing workforce is among the largest, most lucrative industries in Alaska. Alaska’s salmon harvest for 2021 is projected by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to be larger than in 2020, which could be good news for seasonal processing workers hoping to earn money quickly. We focus on recruiting Alaskans first, and we appreciate that many employers make efforts to recruit Alaskans who depend on this seasonal income to support their families and local economies, especially where unemployment rates are high.”
The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the seafood processing industry works in tandem to provide the opportunity to earn significant income.
