The Homer Chamber Board of Directors decided to shift the date of the Homer Halibut Tournament to September 24-25, 2021. It originally was scheduled for the first weekend in June.

Brad Anderson, Executive Director for the Homer Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center spoke to KSRM explaining why, “We are going to shift the date of that. It’s going to go to September 24th to the 25th. We discovered that a lot of people still were confused because, for 34 years, we have been doing a summer-long halibut derby and it’s something that kicks off right around this same time frame and goes all the way through labor day. It just, people just didn’t seem to understand that this was shifting to a two-day fishing tournament. We just, we’re seeing kind of a slow response and we just wanted to make sure that it’s a positive, fun experience for everybody and a chance to earn some good money through that process. Just felt we needed a little more time to explain. I tell you, just, everyone is so caught up into this season’s recovery and all the other attractions right now, I think, it just was getting kind of lost in the mix of all of the things that are going on. We felt in order to get this launched and, for the first time correctly, we need a little more time to get that communicated out to everybody.”

When it comes to halibut fishing, Anderson said, “A lot of people think the halibut season ends right at Labor Day. No, we have continual good halibut fishing here through September into October and we thought this would also give us a chance to communicate that. It’s still a great time to come down and get your halibut and fish in our waters out here when there’s a lot less traffic and pressure.”

If someone did register and sign up for the original halibut fishing tournament, contact the Homer Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center.
