The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District updated their guidance regarding the use of face coverings in correspondence with the CDC. Beginning on June 14th, the district’s guidance will change and align with the updated CDC guidelines and current school and community risk levels.
Pegge Erkeneff, Director of Communications, Community and Government Relations for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District:
“Positive case counts have dropped on the Peninsula and at the same time more and more people are becoming vaccinated. The CDC came out with new guidelines about wearing face coverings that face coverings will be optional. Starting the 14th, on Monday, for staff who work in building as well as for people who come to events in the building, and then for there’s people in our summer programs, the face covering is optional. However, it is strongly recommended that if you’re not vaccinated that you do continue wearing a face covering. Then, our summer school programs that are going through June, in those, they already have some other mitigation plans in places as well. For example, they’re cohorting and then they’re doing other things because we know that the children that are 12 and under can’t be vaccinated yet.”
The updated guidance for school operations beginning June 14th:
- Face coverings for district staff will follow CDC guidance; the district strongly advises non-vaccinated staff to wear a face covering (self-determined)
- Face coverings for all students is optional (informed by parental preference). Face coverings for fully vaccinated visitors is optional; non-vaccinated individuals are strongly advised to wear a face covering
- Physical distancing of 3’ or more will be encouraged while working with others indoors
- The Symptom Free Schools Protocol will continue, so anyone who does not feel well, is experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, or has recently been exposed to someone who is positive for COVID-19, needs to remain at home
