Prior to a failed procedural vote on the For the People Act, the election overhaul bill that was before the Senate, Alaska’s U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski spoke on the Senate floor to express concern with the legislation. She pointed to some aspects to the bill that she does support, such as allowing early voting, easier voting registration, and no-excuse absentee voting. Murkowski said that the bill contains provisions that she says go too far, is bad policy or simply is beyond the powers of Congress to regulate. Murkowski called the bill a partisan, federal takeover of the election system and stated to her colleagues that she’s willing to work to ensure that access to voting is equal, fair, and free from discrimination.
She took to Twitter to say while she supports fair elections she believes the bill doesn’t move the country further down that path.
The bill did not meet the 60-vote threshold needed in the Senate to move the bill to debate.
