Past champions raced to the top of Mount Marathon and back to the finish line in downtown Seward in near-record time in the 93rd running of the Mount Marathon in Seward, Alaska on Wednesday.
Mount Marathon Women’s Race
In the women’s event, Hannah LaFleur posted her fastest time to win the 2021 Mount Marathon, doubling-up on her championship in 2019. LaFleur completed the course in 51 minutes and 24 seconds. Seward’s Ruby Lindquist and Palmer’s Christy Marvin finished second and third overall. In the women’s division 232 runners completed the course within the time limit.
Mount Marathon Men’s Race
In the men’s race, two-time champion and race record holder for fastest time, David Norris, posted a time of 43 minutes and 27 seconds to lead a strong men’s field through the Mount Marathon course.
Norris owns the course record of 41:26 set in 2016; Norris won in 2016 and 2018. Sam Hendry, of Salt Lake City, finished second; Darren Thomas of Reno, Nevada finished third and 19-year-old, former junior race champion, Michael Connelly placed fourth in his first men’s division effort. Glen Hecht, from Soldotna, finished 16 in a field of 254 male finishers.
