The Alaska Division II state football championship game will match the 7-1 Soldotna Stars and the 6-1 Lathrop Malemutes, unquestionably the top two teams in 2021 Division II football.
The ASAA First National Bowl State Championship game for Division II is scheduled for Saturday, October 16th at Service High School.
Division II State Football
SoHi vs Lathrop 4 p.m. Saturday @ SoHi Broadcast on ESPN 1140AM
The Division II playoffs feature a rematch of the week two pairing between Soldotna High School and Lathrop High School played in Fairbanks; the Malemutes holding-off a late SoHi charge for a 27-21 victory, breaking the Stars 22-game win streak. Since that Saturday night, the Soldotna Stars have posted seven-straight wins and have rounded into championship form; while Lathrop cruised through the season suffering only a loss to Division I East Anchorage.
SoHi Stars
The SoHi Stars enter the game on a seven-game win streak, including a week-nine total domination of Railbelt #2 seed North Pole 73-20. The Stars scored on 10 drives stopped only by the clock to end the first half and to end the game.
The Stars, in 2021, earned their 15th-straight NLC championship. SoHi has averaged 39 points-per-game through seven regular season games.
The Stars are the reigning 2019 state champions for Division II football, undefeated in 2020, and SoHi has won eight-straight Division II state championships dating back to 2012.
Lathrop Malemutes
Undefeated against Division II opponents in the regular season, the Malemutes secured their spot in the ASAA Division II Football championship game with a narrow, down-to-the-last-play victory over Eagle River 14-12 on Lathrop’s home field last Saturday. Lathrop’s speed will be on display paired against the power running game of the Stars.
Lathrop fell to Soldotna 69-23 in the 2019 ASAA Division II championship game and the Malemutes finished third in 2018.
