SoHi Wins Luke Spruill Team Title: Kenai’s Gaethle Earns Individual Award

The Luke Spruill Memorial Wrestling Tournament returned to the mat at Kenai Central High School on Saturday after a covid-hiatus, 2021 featuring a full day of wrestling at KCHS.

 

With seven individual champions, the Soldotna Stars scored 141.5 points to win the team title; Kenai was second with 117, Homer was fourth with 60 and Seward was seventh with 22.

 

The Luke Spruill Award was presented to Kenai’s Andrew Gaethle.

The tournament each year selects an athlete for the Luke Spruill Award.  The award is presented to a wrestler who exhibits dedication, good sportsmanship, ability to help and coach others, a can-do attitude, coachability, kindness, leadership and tenacity.  Nominees are selected by the coaches at the tournament.

 

Individual weight-class championship for the Stars included: Jacob Strausbaugh at 112, Ezekiel Miller at 125, Collin Peck at 160, Hunter Richardson at 189A, Liam Babitt at 215, Jessica Leclair at 103 girls and Trinity Donovan at 145 girls.

 

Kenai’s individual championships were earned by Gaethle at 152 pounds, Talon Whicker at 135A, Cameron Cook at 145, and Jenna Yeoman at 160 girls.
