The South side of the Southcentral Conference dominated the first day of competition at the conference tournament hosted at Redington High School.
The Kenai Kardinals and Homer Mariners will play for the SCC championship on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. after both teams recorded two wins in the tournament’s first two rounds.
Kenai opened with a three-set sweep of ACS 25-6. 25-10, 25-7. The Kardinals downed Seward 25-21, 25-18 and 25-15 in the winner’s bracket semi-final.
Homer’s path was similar with a 31-29, 25-12 and 25-21 sweep of Houston and a semi-final five-set match win over #1 N seed Grace 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 20-25 and 17-15.
Both have earned berths to the ASAA Division II State Volleyball Championships. The Mariners won the SCC tournament in 2019 and defeated Kenai for the 2019 state championship. No conference or state volleyball tournaments were held in 2020 due to covid protocols.
Nikiski and Seward play at 9 a.m. with the winner advancing to the 3rd-place game and a shot at the third seed to the Division II state volleyball championships. The Bulldogs, following an opening loss to Grace Christian, rebounded with a victory over Houston in four games. Seward won its opener against Redington before falling to Kenai in the semi-final.
For the Southcentral Conference tournament’s Friday results, the South (Kenai, Homer, Seward, Nikiski) have posted six wins and two losses with only one loss to a team from the North.
