A solid start for the Kenai hockey team in the first quarter turned into a West Anchorage rout with the Eagles downing Kenai 8-1 in the opening game of the End of the Road Hockey Tournament in Homer on Thursday at the Kevin Bell Arena.
West 8 – Kenai 1
The Kardinals trailed 1-0 after one period, playing evenly with West Anchorage before allowing a late, power-play goal to Ian Keim; the first of a three-goal hat trick for Keim.
Kenai’s lone goal came in the third period by Toby Petty with an assist by Jacob Begich.
The Kardinals were outshot 29 to 13 with Kenai goalie Carson Koppes recording 21 saves.
Kenai plays Wasilla on Friday in the tournament’s 5:00 p.m. game. The Kardinals will close the tournament on Saturday against the host Homer Mariners in the 12:30 p.m. game.
