The Kenai Kardinals hockey team generated more shots and more goals in Saturday’s tournament finale’ against Homer than Kenai produced in the first two games of the End of the Road Hockey Tournament combined.
Kenai posted 44 shots on goal in a 7-1 victory over the Mariners to close out the 2021 End of the Road Hockey Tournament.
The tournament championship was won by West Anchorage with a 1-0 overtime victory against Wasilla in the early game on Saturday at the Kevin Bell Arena.
Kenai 7 – Homer 1
Kenai opened the scoring with a Landon Cialek goal at 5:28 of the first period. Logan Mese scored the first of two goals at 13:54 for a 2-0 Kardinal lead.
The second period opened with a Mese goal to give Kenai a 3-0 advantage into the third period.
The Kardinals scored four goals in the third with Jacob Begich scoring just :15 seconds in on a short-handed goal. Toby Petty scored at 5:32 with an assist from Begich; Daniel Sheldon scored with a Toby Petty assist at 10:22 and Begich closed the scoring for Kenai with a second, short-handed goal coming at 14:36. Homer’s lone goal came at 5:07 in the third by Kazden Stineff. Final Score: Kenai 7, Homer 1.
The Kardinals (unofficial) shots on goal totaled 44 shots with Homer goalie Keegan Strong recording 37 saves. In goal for the Kardinals, Carson Koppes recorded 19 saves on 20 shots.
