The Kenai Kardinal hockey team recorded a pair of Railbelt Conference road victories in Kodiak to close out 2021 as the Kards are on hiatus until January.
Kenai defeated Kodiak on Friday 10-0 and 9-2 on Saturday in Kodiak; Kenai’s first-ever trip to Kodiak Island for hockey.
Kenai 10 – Kodiak 0
The Kardinals shut-out the Bears while recording 10 goals by seven different skaters. Kenai lead 3-0 after one period on goals by Jacob Begich, Avery Martin and Logan Mese. Mese and Begich each scored in the second period for a 5-0 Kenai lead. Mese completed his three-goal, hat-trick in the third period along with single goals by Gavin Liles, Josiah Petty, Reagan Graves and Jaden Garner.
Carson Koppes recorded 12 saves in goal for Kenai; the Kardinals put 50 shots on goal against Kodiak.
Kenai 9 -Kodiak 2
Daniel Sheldon lead the offensive barrage on Saturday for the Kardinals with four goals, three netted in the first period. Landen Cialek scored in the first period for a 4-0 Kenai lead. In the second period Kenai’s Zack Rogers, Koda Norbeck and Josiah Petty scored single goals. Kodiak’s Gavin Baxter scored both of the Bears’ goals; one in the second and one in the third period. Ayden Spann closed the scoring with a Kenai goal in the third period. Carson Koppes (13 saves) shared time in goal with Kate Harris 5 five saves).
