Homer Hockey Finishes Regular Season With Much-Needed Victory Over SoHi

With a berth to the 2022 ASAA Division II Hockey State Championships possibly on the line, the Homer Mariner hockey team recorded a much-needed win on Friday over the Soldotna Stars at the Kevin Bell Arena in Homer.

 

The Mariners downed SoHi 4-2 on Homer’s home ice; a win which may clinch a trip to the state tournament for the reigning 2021 and 2020 DII state champions.   The Mariners resume’ should be strong enough for a spot, whether an automatic berth or an at-large berth, at the state tournament at the Menard Arena in Wasilla on February 3-5.

The official state tournament seedings should be released on Sunday.

 

Homer 4 – SoHi 2

The Mariner’s scored two, unanswered, third period goals to down SoHi 4-2 on Friday.

SoHi opened the scoring on a Gehret Medcoff goal in the first period.  Matfey Reutov  scored to open the second period to tie the game at 1-1.  The Stars retook the lead at 2-1 on a Daniel Heath goal; then Matfey Reutov evened the game at 2-2 before the end of the second period.  The Mariners scored a pair of third period goals; one by Micah Williamson and one for Casey Otis for the 4-2 Homer win.  In goal for SoHi, Ayden See recorded 23 saves; Homer’s goalie Keegan Strong recorded 37 saves.

 

Division II state hockey tournament official berths, tournament seeding and bracket will be available on Sunday following the certification of records and selection of at-large berths.
