The Kenai City Council passed a resolution that authorizes budget transfers within the Kenai Recreation Center Improvements Capital Project Fund. The project is intended to resolve several ongoing issues at the facility including replacement of the existing roofing, and repairs and replacements associated with mechanical systems at the facility including, but not limited to air handling systems, boilers, and water heaters. A previous resolution awarded a Design Services Agreement to K+A Architecture for the Recreation Center Improvements Project.
City Manager Paul Ostrander told council:
“This resolution transfers just over $379,000 into this account and along with the other money that’s in that account, there will now be a total of $1.1 million available for construction on the rec center. There is an additional $280,000 that is in the capital improvement plan that the council has yet to authorize that is requesting $280,000 to supplement the mechanical improvements at the rec center. We’re really opening this building up and there’s going to be things, almost certainly, that we will find that we’re not anticipating to find. Council maybe seeing something from administration in the future. If the issues are larger than we think to ask for additional funding. The $1.1 million – we feel that that is going to be sufficient, certainly for the roof replacement and the additional work. Whether or not it’s going to be enough for the roof replacement and the additional work that’s going to be needed on that facility. We’re just not certain. There’s a lot of unknowns still.”
Design work to address replacement of the aging roof and mechanical systems is currently underway. The project is expected to bid late spring with construction beginning this summer. As design work proceeds, more refined cost estimates will be provided.
Scott Curtin, Director of Public Works, told council that completion of this work is necessary to provide for the continued operation of the facility.
The resolution unanimously passed the city council.
