The 50th running of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, Alaska’s Last Great Race, proved a showcase for Brent Sass, as Sass lead the race from the halfway point a Cripple through the burled Arch in Nome.
Brent Sass, from Eureka, Alaska, crossed the finish line in Nome at 5:38.43 on Tuesday, March 15th to claim the 2022 Iditarod, finishing the final push from Safety to Nome in 2 hours and 50 minutes and averaging 7.76 mph on the final 22 miles of the Iditarod northern course. The official race tome for Brent Sass is 8 days, 14 hours, 38 minutes, and 43 seconds.
Sass finished with 11 dogs and a lead of over two hours, a lead that he held for over 550 miles of the race since making a move from the Ophir checkpoint to the halfway point at Cripple.
Dallas Seavey, five-time champion of the Iditarod, finished second arriving in Nome at 6:46.51 Wednesday morning. Seavey finished strong an clocked-in just one hour and 12 minutes behind Sass. Seavey’s total race time is 8 days, 15 hours, 46 minutes and 51 seconds.
