The defense for the Ninilchik Wolverines boys was stifling; the offense relentless; and the Wolverines dominated in the opening game of the ASAA 2A Boys State Basketball Championships at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.

Ninilchik 73 – Hooper Bay 34

The Wolverines controlled all aspects of play in a 73-34 victory over the Western Coastal Conference Hooper Bay Warriors.

Ninilchik opened with an 18-2 run and lead 24-12 after one quarter.  With a 23-point, second quarter, the Wolverines built a 47-20 advantage and extended to a 64-24 lead after three quarters.  Running clock in the fourth quarter shortened the game and the Wolverines won 73-34.

Landon Coburn lead all scorers with 21 points (only one basket in the second half) and Cole Moore added 13 points.  Lukah Kalugin scored 11 and Jaylin Scott added 10 points as four players scored in double-figures for Ninilchik.

The Wolverines advance to Friday night’s winner’s-bracket round against Unalakleet with a game scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
