The opening round of the ASAA State 3A Girls Basketball Championships featured the Kenai Kardinal girls and the Homer Mariners boys, both representing the Peninsula Conference at the 3A state basketball tournament at the Alaska Airlines Center on Anchorage.
Sitka 47 – Kenai 34
The Kenai Kardinals fell to the Eastern Conference champion Sitka Wolves 47-34 in the first game of the 3A girts tournament bracket on Wednesday morning.
Kenai trailed 19-17 at the half, led by 10 points for Emma Beck. Sitka extended to a seven-point lead in the third quarter and pulled ahead by 13 points by the final buzzer. Emma Beck topped all scorers with 20 point for the Kardinals.
Kenai returns to the court on Thursday morning with a 10:30 contest against the Valdez Buccaneers. Valdez fell in the first round to the #1 seed in the 3A girls bracket, the Monroe Rams 36-21.

Valdez Buccaneers 52 – Homer Mariners 49
The Homer Mariners battled to the final possession against the Bucs, getting one-last shot before the buzzer in a 52-49 loss to Valdez in the first boys game on the 3A boys tournament bracket on Wednesday morning.
Valdez held a 40-36 advantage into the final quarter and scored with under :30 seconds remaining to secure the lead. Homer’s final possession with :08 seconds remaining managed a shot, but no basket, and Valdez recorded the victory 52-49. Carter Tennison scored 25 points for the Mariners, including 11 points in the final quarter.
The Mariners move to the noon game on Thursday to face the Barrow Whalers.
