Authorities Battled 2.5 Acre Fire Tuesday Evening Near Cooper Landing; Crews Performing Cleanup

UPDATE: 5:00 AM: Cooper Landing Emergency Services and the Alaska Division of Forestry were on the scene of a wildfire in the area of mile 46.5 of the Sterling Highway in Cooper Landing.

 

 

According to the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center Wildland Fire Dashboard, the Alaska State Trooper Dispatch reported the ‘Kenai Lake Overlook’ fire at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday evening. The dispatch noted that that there was a new fire north of Cooper Landing, which, according to KPB Alerts, was approximately 2.5 acres which spread toward the north into the Chugach National Forest.

 

 

The fire was active on all sides burning in slash on the south part and timber on the north side with 1-2ft flame lengths and West winds 8-10mph. The fire plotted in critical suppression management area.

 

 

The U.S. Forest Service, State Division of Forestry, Cooper Landing Volunteer Fire Department, and Moose Pass Volunteer Fire Department responded including a helicopter crew, the Russian River Suppression Module, and White Mountain T21A crew.

 

 

Crews and resources worked through the evening establishing a dozer line around the heel of the fire to protect values at risk.

 

The Alaska Division of Forestry remains on scene monitoring fire ground and cleaning mop up activities. According to Cooper Landing Emergency Services, the Forest Service had over 40 boots on the ground battling the fire Tuesday evening.

 

Crews likely will be on scene for a next few days to complete mop up.

At this time, it is an active working fire and additional resources are responding. Cooper Landing Emergency Services want the public to avoid this area of the highway due to emergency vehicle traffic.
