Kardinal Boys Record Lone First-Round Victory At Division II State Soccer

In four combined games in the opening round of the 2022 ASAA Division II State Soccer Championships, the Kenai and Soldotna girls and boys combined for only two goals and a single first-round victory earned by the Kenai boys over Ketchikan.

 

Division II Soccer State Championships: Boys First-Round Game Results

Kenai Boys 1 – Ketchikan 0

The #5 seed Kenai boys defeated Ketchikan 1-0 and advance to a winner’s-bracket, semi-final on Friday at 3 p.m. against #1 seed Juneau at Service High School.

Wade James, with a corner-kick assist from Enrique Mercado, scored in the waning seconds of regulation time to secure a 1-0 Kardinal boys victory over #4 seed Ketchikan at Eagle River on Thursday.

Kenai won back-to-back state soccer championships in 2018 and 2019 and missed the opportunity to three-peat with spring championships cancelled in 2020.  Kenai finished 5th in 2021.

Juneau 5 – SoHi 0

The Division II #1 seed Juneau shutout the #8 seed Soldotna Stars 5-0 in opening round action at West Anchorage.

Juneau advances to play Kenai in the 3 p.m Friday pairing at Service High School.

 

Division II Soccer State Championships: Girls First-Round Game Results

Homer Girls 1 -Kenai Girls 0  

Homer’s Ava Halstead scored off a deflected ball with 15 minutes remaining in the second half for a 1-0 victory over the #6 seed Kenai girls.

The #3 seed Homer advances to play #2 Grace Christian in the winner’s-bracket, semi-final on Friday at 1 p.m. at West Anchorage High.

The Kenai girls will face Soldotna in the 9 a.m. consolation round game at West with the winner advancing to Saturday’s fourth-place game.

Grace Christian Girls 2 – SoHi Girls 1

The #2 seed Grace Christian Grizzles held-off the #7 seed SoHi Star girls 2-1 at Eagle River.

The Grace girls scored a first-half goal and added a second-half goal for a 2-0 lead before the Stars scored on a Jolie Widaman goal late in the game.  SoHi goalie Sunny Miller turned away numerous Grizzlie attacks for the Stars.

The Stars and Kardinals meet at 9 a.m. Friday with the winner advancing and the loser closing-out tournament play.  Grace advances to play Homer at 1 p.m. at West in the winner’s bracket.
