UPDATE 06/03/22 – The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Melanie Moonin.
ORIGINAL: A vehicle vs. pedestrian fatality was reported on the Seward Highway near mile 101 in Bird Creek, which closed the northbound lanes of the highway before 3:00 a.m. this (Monday) morning.
A preliminary investigation found that a silver Dodge Ram pickup was traveling northbound on the Seward Highway when an adult female pedestrian was struck by the vehicle, according to a traffic alert from AK511. Anchorage Police Department officers and medical personnel with the Girdwood Fire Department responded to the scene, and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. During the collision, the occupants of the vehicle were injured.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notifications. The driver remained on scene and has been cooperative with the investigation.
The northbound lanes of the Seward Highway were closed at mile 101 while investigators with the Major Collision Investigation unit processed the scene and traffic alternated in both directions using the southbound lane.
No charges have been filed at this time. All lanes of the Seward Highway near the traffic fatality were reopened at 7:28 a.m.
