The Peninsula Oilers outplayed the Mat-Su Miners in nearly every facet of the game on Saturday; except for runs scored.
Peninsula Oilers 3 – Mat-Su Miners 4 11 Innings
The Oilers left 16 runners on base, had four runners thrown out on the bases, outhit the Miners 9 to 5, and only allowed two earned runs in the 4-3, 11 inning ABL contest.
The Miners took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a two-out single scoring two runs. The Oilers scored a run on a bases-loaded walk scoring Shunsuke Sakaino in the third. The Oilers added two runs and took the lead 3-2 in the fourth inning on two hits and left three on-base. The Miners tied the game in the top of the eighth 3-3.
In the 10th inning, both teams failed to score after starting with a runner at second; both left a runner on third. The Miners plated the game-winning run in the 11th inning with a bases-loaded balk charge to Oilers reliever Will O’Neil. The Oilers left runners at second and third in the bottom of the eleventh.
The Oilers collected nine hits led by Graiden West who went 4 for 5 and James Shimashita who reached base four times with a single and three walks.
The Oilers and Miners series continues on Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. game and the series ends with a 4th of July 6 p.m. contest. Free tickets to the July 4th game will be passed-out at the 4th of July Parade in Kenai on Monday.
