State Board Of Education Holds Quarterly Meeting In Soldotna

On June 7 and 8, the Alaska State Board of Education & Early Development held its quarterly meeting in Soldotna at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly Chambers.

 

A Professional Development session was held on Wednesday, June 7, and included updates to the Mt. Edgecumbe High School Policy Manual, the Division of Libraries, Archives, and Museums’ Stratton Library and Sheldon Jackson Museum facilities, and Tribal Compacting. In addition, the Board held Committee Meetings based on the priorities of the Board which include Reading, Career and Technical Education (CTE) & Cultural Education, Safety & Well-Being, Tribal Compacting, and Effective Educators.

 

On Thursday, June 8, during the Business Meeting, the Board approved the FY2024 Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) budget, the establishment of the Alyeska Reading Academy and Institute, and the Alaska Computer Science State Plan.

 

The Board also approved regulations for the Virtual Education Consortium and Interscholastic Activities to go out for public comment and adopted regulations for a Statewide Screening Tool. The public comment periods will open when published on the Alaska Online Public Notices website.

 

Chair James Fields was reelected as Board Chair. Lorri Van Diest was voted as First Vice Chair and Sally Stockhausen was reelected as Second Vice Chair. The Board also received an update from Acting Commissioner Teshner, approved the FY2024 meeting dates, and the consent agenda.

 

The Board’s next scheduled meeting is a virtual quarterly meeting on July 26, 2023.
