Parents, prepare for ecstasy from your children, and perhaps the necessity of some extra childcare, all schools in the Central and Eastern Peninsula are closed today, Nov. 9, due to heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions.
The Kenai Peninsula School District announced this morning that all schools in the central and Eastern Peninsula areas will be closed today, November 9th, due to heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions. Schools in Ninilchik and south of Ninilchik will remain open. According to KPBSD Superintendent, Clayton Holland, the decision was made in the interest of student and KPBSD staff safety.

“Real heavy snowfall in this part so that in a sterling, you know this Central Peninsula area and out in Nikiski,” said Holland. “We can’t get drivers in, and we can’t get those buses out of where they are. So, we went ahead and made the call to close the schools here in the Central Peninsula and then all the way over to Seward and Eastern Peninsula, Cooper Landing, and Hope. We are making that decision on. Based on the safety of our students and staff and everyone else who has been on the road today.
The superintendent added that the school district never makes the decision to close schools lightly, “These are never easy decisions, but ultimately we have to make you know, can we run buses? Can we get people safely to school? Can we have them wait on the side of the road for buses? All of that goes into consideration.”
According to the announcement made early this morning, the following schools in the Central and Eastern Peninsula will be closed for the entire school day Thursday, November 9th:

- Nikiski North Star Elementary School
- Redoubt Elementary School
- River City Academy
- Seward Elementary School
- Seward High School
- Seward Middle School
- Skyview Middle School
- Soldotna Elementary School
- Soldotna High School
- Soldotna Montessori Charter School
