The Kenai Peninsula Borough met on Tuesday, January 16th to discuss the possibility of taking on a new look.
The ordinance (2023-28) would amend KPB code and allow the assembly to take on a new logo.
The previous logo showcases a bald eagle, a moose, and a salmon leaping out of the water, along with a mountain and a small city in the background.
This logo has been in place since 1995.
Some of the complaints with the current logo are that it’s dated, very difficult to scale, and too detailed to be effective.
For the sake of branding, the logo must be something bold and simple simultaneously.
An ordinance that was presented back in 2021 (19-52) appropriated project funds for the “Mission, Vision, Values, Brand Identity, and Logo Development Project”; which was designated for creating a new logo.
The proposed new logo would have the letters “KPB” in white, bold letters, and a dark purple night sky in the background. It would also have two trees, a mountain range, and the Big Dipper, as well as the North Star in the corner.
The new proposed logo reflects a collaborative effort incorporating the work and input of graphic design experts, elected officials, Borough staff, and Borough administration.
This ordinance will adopt a new Borough logo, remove the image of the previous logo from code, and provide that the Borough’s logo may be updated or changed by a resolution.
“This new logo is part of a kind of overall rebranding effort that the borough is going through,” said Assembly Member Mike Tupper. “And our current logo is pretty old and expensive to reproduce. This new version, it proves to be hopefully a little cheaper to reproduce, and the change that is being made to the code, which is why we couldn’t have this as a consent agenda.”
After a unanimous vote, the ordinance to change the assembly logo was passed.
