Soldotna Police Chief Gene Meek has presented two officers and a sergeant with a life-saving award at the Soldotna City Council meeting Wednesday night.
Meek believes that it’s important to acknowledge the good deeds of officers. Especially when they help people who made a mistake.
“What’s happening is people are given a second chance. Even if they make a mistake, they’re given a second chance to go out and rectify their wrongs. In this situation, that’s exactly what occurred,” said Meek.
On November 13th, Soldotna Police officers received a call around midnight from a woman who saw three men lying on the floor at the skatepark outside of their vehicle.
The first individual to respond to the call was Officer Reed Culver.
“Fortunately for us, he’s got experience as an Army combat medic. He shows up and recognizes the situation for what it is it’s a triple overdose. Three gentlemen thought they were indulging in one narcotic, turns out that they were indulging in something that was not what they suspected. And all three had been overdosing, and were in a bad state of repair,” said Meek.
Shortly after, Sergeant Stephen Clary and Officer Bryan Hahn arrived at the scene, and all three members began administering Narcan to the overdosed trio.
After a couple of doses for each person, lifesaving First Aid CPR. They held on until ambulance staff arrived and transported the overdosed individuals to the hospital. It was serious enough that two of those young men got flown out from our hospital to get furthermore in-depth treatment.
“If it wasn’t for the life-saving measures of our officers. Those three men wouldn’t be here today. They would not have that second chance of life, to go forward and improve their lives and be with their families,” said Meek.
For their actions, Sergeant Clary, and Officers Culver and Hahn were presented with lifesaving recognition awards.
