A woman was killed Monday morning when a vehicle struck her near the Rainbow Creek Trailhead on the Seward Highway.

The collision occurred just after 6:00 a.m. on Sep. 9, the Anchorage Police Department said. According to the APD dispatch on the incident, Anchorage Police Mid-Shift Patrol Officers responded to mile 108.5 on the Seward Highway regarding a vehicle versus pedestrian collision.

Initial indications were that an adult male driver was traveling northbound toward Anchorage along Turnagain Arm in a Toyota Sienna when he collided with an adult female pedestrian.

Life-saving measures were performed on the victim; she was ultimately declared deceased at the scene by Anchorage Fire Department Medics.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police.  The dynamics of the crash, including the pedestrian’s location when she was struck, are still under investigation.

No charges have been filed.

The Major Collision Investigations Unit (MCIU) responded to the scene.  Initially, all lanes of the Seward Highway were shut down at the crash site.  Traffic investigators later opened one lane to allow alternating traffic to flow.

On Sunday, two other pedestrians were struck by vehicles and killed in Anchorage. Those two incidents occurred about six hours apart. The first happened at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning on Muldoon Road near East 6th Avenue. The second pedestrian killed on Sunday was hit near the intersection of Debarr Road and Bragaw Street.

The victims’ identities in both of the Sunday deaths, as well as Monday morning’s, will be released once next-of-kin notification procedures have been completed.
