An email scam impersonating the City of Kenai Planning Department is currently targeting applicants for conditional use permits, preliminary plats, and rezones found on the City Council Meeting agendas published online.
The scam emails contain key indicators that applicants should note to help identify a potential scam.
Some conditional use permit applicants received a scam email announcing “payment instruction for application approval fee.” The scam asserts applicants must pay the new fee to “move forward” in the application process. It references an “attached invoice that includes the necessary payment details” and instructions for paying the fee.
The Planning Department does not request payment from applicants for conditional use permits by providing instructions to wire funds.
The scam was sent from an email ending in @usa.com. Please be advised that the City of Kenai only uses official @kenai.city email addresses.
If you receive an email like this, please call the Kenai Police Department at 907-283-7879 or forward the email to [email protected] to report the scam.
