After more than 20 years of requests from residents, the community of Nikiski will now be able to list “Nikiski” as its official mailing city. Previously, residents were required to use “Kenai,” leading to longstanding concerns about local identity.

Representative Nick Begich announced the change in a recent message to Alaskans, noting that the update follows decades of letters, paperwork, and appeals from Nikiski residents.

Some in the community have viewed the change as a step toward preserving local recognition. Begich emphasized that all communities, regardless of size, should be heard. “It doesn’t matter how big or small the community is. If it matters to you, it matters to me.”

The announcement does not change municipal boundaries or governance, but allows residents to use “Nikiski” in mailing addresses.
