Weather across the Kenai Peninsula has been quite warmer than expected for this time of year, which puts the Tustamena 200 sled dog race at risk for delay or cancellation.

We spoke to coordinator Tami Murray who said, it doesn’t look good.

Murray: “As of today, Thursday, we’re still looking for a trail that we can use for the race, right now we know we can’t get to Homer, the creeks up high are running fast, Deep Creek and Anchor River so we can’t go that route because we can’t take the chance of these teams crossing five feet of water so we’re looking at other alternatives, it doesn’t look good I have to be honest.”

Murray said they will make an announcement Monday as to whether or not they plan to reschedule, but some of the local teams are heading up North, which isn’t a good sign.

Murray: “If we do cancel, we’ll let everyone know and we’re thinking maybe we can postpone but a week isn’t going to be enough I don’t think so we’re going to meet as a board and decide what else we can do on Monday.”
