Caring For The Kenai Presented During Today’s Chamber Luncheon

Caring for the Kenai is an award winning environmental contest that challenges local high school students.

 

Today Merrill Sikorksi presented a speech at the joint Kenai/Soldotna Chamber luncheon about Caring For The Kenai and how it started 23 years ago.

 

Sikorski: “Its high school curriculum, its been here for 23 years. Our high school kids are challenged to answer the prompt What Can I Do? Create, invent or improve to better care for the environment for prepare the community for a natural disaster. Its cross curricular, it meets state science standards as well as language arts standards and in many schools is assigned as cross curricular as a language arts as well as a science program.

 

We asked Sikorski what major changes has he seen take place in the community as a result of to students answering this challenge.

 

Sikorski: “We have had projects that have been implemented that have actually saved tax payers money because they’ve been students driven, we’ve see reforestation in Kenai from an entry, we’ve seen river bank habitat, we’ve seen the boardwalk over in Soldotna remodeled by some high schools students that not only had the idea to do it but took the initiative get funded and get it sponsored.
