May 30 is the deadline for high school students to apply for the annual Alaska Business Week held in Fairbanks July 27.

Program Director Nicole Shuh said multiple Kenai Peninsula students apply to participate in the program each year.

Shuh: “You know a lot of our students come out of it and they say that maybe they were a little hesitant when they started, they might have gotten pushed by their parents but by the end of the week they had a great time, they learned a lot and made friends that they never would have met from around the state.”

She described what the students do during the week.

Shuh: “Each team works on a business simulation where they as a team have to make decisions for eight quarters of a business, and they make decisions such as marketing or how many sales associates they need and things of that nature and they compete against each other in that. They also create a product or service and try to sell it at the end of the week to investors. So the week kind of gives them experience on what it really is to be in business.”

Shuh said that the cost for the week is $475, however sponsors often help.

Shuh: “So Ravn has been a sponsor for the last couple of years and they give us about 18 tickets to get students up and back and so when students apply they can request and they can get a free ticket through Ravn.
