A full, first weekend of May, featured competition for area high schools in all spring sports.
Track and Field: Anchorage Invitational & Palmer Relays
Peninsula schools split between the Anchorage Invitational at Dimond High and the Palmer Relays at Palmer High on May 2-3.
Anchorage Invitational
The Dimond Lynx girls and boys win the team titles; however, it was the Soldotna girls that had the meet buzzing at Dimond.
The SoHi girls 4X800M relay team, 2013 state champions, ran away from the field and posted the fastest time in the state for the 4X800M relay this season with a time of 9:38.38; team members included: Dani McCormick, Olivia Hutchings, Daisy Nelson and Sadie Fox. The same girls that won state in 2013 teamed up on Saturday to post a time 14 seconds faster than their state championship time last year. The Star girls are only three seconds off the state record which was set by West Valley in 2004.
SoHi’s Dani McCormick and Olivia Hutchings raced to a 1-2 finish in the girls 800M run; Hutchings placed third in the 1600M; Makayla Wong finished third in the shot put and Kiana Hendricks, fourth. The SoHi girls placed second in the 4X400M relay and third in the 4X200M relay; Daisy Nelson placed seventh in the 400M and sixth in the triple jump; and Lindsey Wong placed eighth in high jump. The Star boys Dalton Best finished seventh in the shot put.
Skyview’s Haille Landess finished 8th in the 100M and the Panther’s 4X200M relay finished fourth and the 4X400M relay, seventh. Micah Hilbish raced to a second in the 800M and a third in the 400M; Skyview boys placed seventh in the 4X400M relay. Adam O’Guinn added a sixth in the shot put.
Palmer Relays
Kenai and Nikiski joined most of Region III at the Palmer Relays, the Kardinal girls placing second and the Kardinal boys third in the team scoring in Friday’s standard meet. Saturday featured a series of relay events and non-traditional events.
Top performances were turned-in for the Kardinals girls by Allie Ostrander, winning the 400M and 3200M events; Abby Beck, first in discus; Julieanne Wilson, first in long jump; and first in 4X200M relay and second in the 4X100M relay, 4X400M relay and 4X 800M relay.
CIA’s Madison Orth won the 100M hurdles and the triple jump.
In the boys events, Kodiak’s Levi Thomet won the 800M, 1600M, and 3200M runs. Kenai’s Jonah Theisen finished second in both the 800M and 1600M and third in the 3200M; Jordan Theisen finished second in the 3200M and third in the 800M and 1600M. The Kenai boys finished second in the 4X100M relay, 4X200M relay and 4X800M relay.
CIA’s Zach Taplin won the shot put and Nikiski’s Seth Carsten won the boys high jump.
Soccer: Conference Contests
Peninsula teams hosted Grace, Houston Colony and Palmer in Region III soccer conference games.

SoHi girls split Northern Lights Conference games with Kodiak at the Soldotna field. Kenai fall twice in Anchorage.
Friday: Kodiak 4 – SoHi 1
Kodiak scored three runs in the fifthe inning for the 4-1 victory. SoHi outhit Kiodiak 9 to 5 and the Stars left 11 runners on base.
Saturday: SoHi 5 – Kodiak 4
The Stars scored three runs in the fifth, following a Kodiak two-run top of the fifth. The Stars lead 2-1 after the second inning. Serens Prior recorded the win on the mound, her third game in three days pitching for the Stars.
