Homer community members will have an opportunity next Wednesday, May 14, to hear about a new, non-profit ‘folk school’ working to open there.
Chad Jones and four other citizens founded the non-profit North Pacific Folk School on April 24. He gave a broad overview of what a folk school is.
Jones: “They host numerous conferences and become a venue for courses and events and a very friendly campus a community campus.”
Jones also described folk schools as a “school of crafts”, where people can learn different techniques like sustainable gardening or blacksmithing.
He said they aim to model it after North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota where he attended classes offered by people from around the nation.
Jones said the Homer folk school would work with the talents already in the area.
Jones: “Our main goal is to use somebody local that is an educator or a teacher already or is really enthusiastic. There’s just been people coming out of the woodwork the last couple weeks that are just so excited to be involved and to help. So we are looking for people to step up as advisers and help us do whatever we need to do in the next year to get this thing up and running.”
The meeting will be at the Homer City Council Chambers at 6pm.
