The Soldotna Stars girls and Kenai Kardinals boys race to the team titles at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Track and Field Championships held at Kenai Central High School.
In the first of the track season’s “Big 3”, the Soldotna girls and Kenai boys ran away with the team titles on the strength of seven event titles for each team.
Girls Borough Track Recap
The SoHi girls were lead by a core of athletes scoring team points across the board, including seven event victories. Daisy Nelson lead the way with victories in the 200M, 400M, triple jump and a second in the 100M. Makayla Wong won the shot put and Lindsay Wong captured the high jump.
The Kardinal girls, second in the team scoring, received three individual victories from Allie Ostrander. Allie swept the distance events with wins in the 800M, 1600M, 3200M. Abby Beck threw to a title in the discus.
Nikiski’s Kerry Ross won the 100M in school record time.
Cook Inlet Academy’s Madison Orth dominated the hurdle events winning the 100M and 300M hurdles.
Boys Borough Track Recap
The Kenai Kardinal boys scored 113 points for the team title, followed by Skyview and Homer, which tied for second with 65 points each.
Kenai’s distance crew again dominated with victories in the 800M and 3200M by Jordan Theisen and a win in the 1600M by Jonah Theisen. The Kardinals Lucas Casebeer also won the 100M and 200M sprints and Kenai won the 4X100M relay and 3200M relay.
Nikiski’s Seth Carstens recorded a pair of wins in the jumps with a first in the high jump and a first in the long jump.
The Panthers Micah Hilbish raced to a victory in the 400M and anchored the winning 1600M relay.
SoHi’s Ryan Toney won the 110M hurdles.
CIA’s Zach Taplin recorded a pair of wins in the throws; winning the discus and shot put, followed by team mate Riley Smithwick in both events.
2014 Region Track & Field Championship: May 16-17
The 2014 Region II and Region III Track and Field Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 16-17. The regional track meets serve as the qualifying meets for the ASAA 2014 State Track and Field Championships.
The Region III Championships will be contested at Palmer High School with competition in both the 3A and 4A divisions. Kenai Central and Soldotna will compete in the 4A division; Skyview, Nikiski, Homer and Seward in the 3A division.
The Region II Championships will be contested at Su-Valley High School featuring CIA, Ninilchik and Seldovia from the Kenai Peninsula.
