Earlier this year Borough Mayor Mike Navarre mentioned checking the borough assessment process during an assembly meeting.
Mayor Navarre: “We are seeing some differences in the level of our revenues, we did see an increase in oil and gas properties, the value of oil and gas properties so we’re seeing a little bit of an increase there but we’re seeing kind of a flat level for assessed values in residential properties and we’re going to take a look at that also over the course of next year to determine whether or not we’re actually following state law and assessing the full and true values.”
We checked in with Mayor Navarre to see where they are on the process and he said that the appraisal process will not be reviewed for Fiscal Year 15 due to the fact that appraisers are currently out checking properties and any changes would have to be proposed by the middle of June.
Mayor Navarre: “So that review process on assessing we’re going to start later this year after we get into the new fiscal year and we get folks back and talk about what they experienced in the field and its really just an administrative oversight function that I feel you should do from time to time just to see how departments are operating and make sure you understand and can offer input into the way we are delivering our services.”
He added that the assessment department appears to be doing well as last year saw the lowest number of assessment appeals ever.
The Borough Assembly will meet tonight at 6:00 pm at the Assembly Chambers in Soldotna
