The City of Soldotna is offering free camping to members of the military over Memorial Day weekend.
Soldotna Parks and Rec Director Andrew Carmichael said the offer applies to May 23 through the 26 at Centennial campground.
Carmichael: “Between the service men that are overseas, the veterans that are back we do the work with the wounded warriors program, the wounded heroes and trying to give back to not only them but even some of the local people, so we can up with the idea lets invite them down Memorial Day weekend, the first big camping weekend, lets offer it to veterans and active military service members for free, as a thank you.”
He said he has high hopes for the event.
Carmichael: “My ultimate dream for this event would be to have gentlemen like Herb Stettler from World War II matching up with the guys who just came back from Afghanistan and having those kind of groups get together and be able to go.”
Veterans need to present their military ID in order to receive the free camping.
