Crews from Construction Unlimited are working to repair a down drain near the Kenai Spur/Forest Intersection in Kenai.

Jill Reese with the State Department of Transportation said they are a contractor of the state who have been hired to repair some culvert problems in the area.

Reese: “And we’re doing, rather than digging up the road which would entail significant traffic disruption, they are doing a bore, what they call a bore replacement which will be boring under the highway and putting the culvert in that way. In order to do that they have to dig out quite a bit of material but there won’t be any traffic delays or interruption because of the method they’re using.”

Kenai City Manager Rick Koch said its been a problem for a while.

Koch: “Over the course of the last nine years from time to time there have been issues with that culvert under the roadway there. Old metal culverts from time to time get to the point where they deteriorate and this one seems to be in that condition, there have been holes rusted through the culvert I think in a couple of different locations under the roadway and when that happens I think it causes sink holes in the road and so many people driving by can probably remember seeing those.”
