The culvert replacement that has had Beaver Loop closed for nearly a month will hopefully be done in the next few weeks.
Kenai City Manager Rick Koch spoke with us about the project.
Koch: “Kenai Watershed forum is the sponsor of that project and its a Department of Transportation road so while we have some peripheral involvement we don’t have a lot and I’m not real sure where the contractor is in their schedule, its supposed to be done in the next two weeks I think, we certainly don’t want to run up against personal use fishery without having Beaver Loop open.”
As we previously reported, the culvert is being replaced because the existing culvert was poorly designed for juvenile salmon migration and was deteriorating quickly.
Koch also spoke with us about the Beaver Loop improvements which is still in the design phase.
Koch: “This summer is environmental and design work, probably through next summer even until the design is finalized so its moving along and because it has FHWA funding in it it moves along slower, Federal Highway Administration money, so there’s a whole bunch of other hoops that the state has to go through to be able to use that federal money and it takes time.”
