Based on victims’ family requests, both Senator Mark Begich and challenger Dan Sullivan are retracting television ads that reference a multiple homicide.

The Begich campaign launched an ad Friday that accused Sullivan of allowing lighter sentences for sex offenders when he was Alaska attorney general.

Begich ad: “I know what he did as attorney general he let a lot of sex offenders get off with light sentences.”

In that ad the example is given of a defendant in an upcoming murder trial but did not name the suspect.

A rebuttal ad by Sullivan did name the suspect.

Sullivan ad: “Mark Begich’s Lies about this tragedy are shameful.”

A lawyer representing the family asked that both ads were removed and tv stations have reported that both campaigns have asked the ads stop airing.

Those ads referenced the early release of a sex offender who now stands charged with murder and the sexual assault of a 2-year-old.
