At the October 20 School Board Meeting, the board accepted the 2014 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

Assistant Superintendent Dave Jones recapped what the CAFR found for 2014 deficit spending.

Jones: “So what we really look at as far as fund balance for the board is, what’s the unassignable fund balance. we predicted that we were going to deficit spend last year, we did, we didn’t deficit spend as much as we had predicted but the big reason for that was we came back at the end of the year and we had a lot more money left in our fuel and heating accounts because we had a mellow winter.”

The district expected $3.3 million from state and federal funding sources but only received a little over $3 million.

As they move into the FY16 budget process, Jones said enrollment is up.

Jones: “Last year for budget purposes, last spring, we projected we’d have 8,773 full time students, we have 8,779, so we have six more than we projected, which it’s always better to have more. That six is a small amount of additional money, it’s not anything that we can go out and hire extra people for but what it is is, ok the methods that we use to forecast are consistent and we’ll continue to do that.”
