Nikiski Well Surveyors to Be Out this Weekend

DOWL HKM has been accepting permissions to access wells from residents in Nikiski where they will be surveying and gathering well level data this weekend.

DOWL Environmental Specialist Emily Creely said they have gotten a great response and have about 60-70 locations they will be going to.

Creely: “The head of our survey crew is going to go out with one of our environmental staff who has a surveying background and experience with wells and knows this project really well, so the two of them are going to take geographic coordinates and get the ground elevation and basic location information for each well. Then they will open the wells up, they will point those meters down and that will tell them how far it is to the ground water and they will process all that information back.”

As we previously reported, the surveying is per request of the borough and the data will be used to map out the ground water levels, flow, and directionality.

Creely outlined the project study area in Nikiski.

Creely: “We’re really looking for areas in central Nikiski, that’s basically between the McGahan airstrip and the dock and then between Island Lake Road and Wick Road and the high school basically and Marhenke Street.”

November 14 is the last day for participants to grant access to DOWL to their wells and can do so by contacting Creely at 907-562-2000.
