The Nikiski Bulldogs battled through the double-back bracket for a fourth place finish at the ASAA 3A State Volleyball, finishing tournament play with a 2-2 record following an opening day loss to eventual champion Mt. Edgecumbe.
The Bulldogs fell on Saturday to Grace Christian, eliminating Nikiski after the Bulldogs recorded wins on Friday over Barrow and Southcentral Conference champion Homer. Grace Christian downed Nikiski 28-26, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-19. Senior Rachel Thompson recorded 22 assists and sophomore Ayla Pitt recorded 10 kills.
The Nikiski girls also earned the 3A Sportsmanship Award.
Rachel Thompson was named to the All-State 1st Team and was named 3A Setter of the Year.
In the 3A Championship, the Mt Edgecumbe Braves outlasted the Monroe Rams 33-31 in a 30-point tiebreaker. Monroe defeated Mt. Edgecumbe in the first championship game to give the Braves their first tournament loss, forcing the tiebreaker.
The 4A championship goes to South Anchorage.
