The 2015 National Guard Iron Dog Snowmachine Race will incorporate a ceremonial start, similar to the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, for the upcoming 2015 event.
The Anchorage Assembly approved a resolution in support of establishing a ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage for the unofficial start of the Iron Dog. The 2015 race will feature a ceremonial start on Saturday, February 20th and then will restart with the official start in Big Lake on Sunday, February 21st.
Kevin Kastner, Executive Director, Iron Dog, Inc., stated, “The genesis of the idea came out of a vision statement I presented to the Iron Dog Board of Directors in the summer of 2010. With the addition of Anchorage, I believe we are making a great contribution to a refreshed legacy of winter tourism and starting a new chapter for motorsports and snowmachining advocacy. You’ll often hear me say the Iron Dog is much more than a race, and I believe this just the beginning.”
The 2031 mile snowmachine race will feature over 70 racers in the Pro Class including 37 Pro Class teams. Returning champions Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad will again team-up for the 2015 race. Notably missing will be 7-time champion Scott Davis and 5-time champion Dusty Van Meter, from the central peninsula, as both have decided not to enter in 2015. Van Meter last won the Iron Dog in 2012 and 2013. Mark Carr and Cory Davis will represent the local area in the 2015 Iron Dog.
