As Anchorage begins discussions to opt into the new statewide program to waive certain registration taxes and fees on older vehicles, Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Mike Navarre said there is a lot to consider.
He added the assembly has not discussed the action much yet.
Navarre: “There’s revenue impacts to that that have to be weighed and we’re going to discuss that and weigh that as part of our budget process but at this time I don’t have any plans to introduce that for the borough, it’s optional, it’s not something that we have to do it’s something that we can do if we think it’s important and justified but then we have to figure out whether or not the revenue impacts that are associated with it, whether that gets shifted someplace else and if so what are the impacts from that.”
On Tuesday an Anchorage assembly member introduced the proposal to opt into the program that would waive biennial registration taxes and fees for owners of noncommercial vehicles or trailers that are at least eight years old, arguing that the purpose is to eliminate needless re-registrations and make DMV’s more efficient.
Navarre said so far in other municipalities there seem to be complications.
Navarre: “I think the Mat-Su is the only one that has adopted it so far and I think that they are seeing some impacts from it that they really hadn’t anticipated at the time that they had adopted it.”
