A rerouting of the Sterling Highway through Cooper Landing which has been talked about for nearly 30 years recently reached a new milestone.
Project Manager Kelly Peterson with the Department of Transportation said a cooperating agency review has taken place, those comments are being examined and the DOT is aiming to release a report for public comment in February 2015.
Peterson: “The public comment period is generally 30 days, and accompanying the comment period there’s also an opportunity for hearings and I believe we’re looking at holding the hearings in Anchorage, Cooper Landing and Sterling.”
She outlined what the public would be going over during the comment period.
Peterson: “Improving the highway in that 15 mile stretch of the Sterling Highway between milepost 45 to 60 and our purpose in need, improving safety, improving congestion, bringing the highway up to current design standards. And right now the document has four reasonable build alternatives and we also analyze the no-build which we have in the EIS as the baseline. There’s three that go north around the community and one that goes south.”
