Nikiski Crowns Five Champions At Kachemak Wrestling Tournament

The Nikiski Bulldogs wrestling program qualified 13 wrestlers to the upcoming state championships while placing second at the Kachemak Conference Wrestling Tournament.

Five Bulldogs wrestled to conference championships; as the Bulldogs finished behind host Houston in the team scoring.

Kachemak Conference Champions for Nikiski included: TJ Cox, 120 lb.; Tyler Handley, 152 lb.; Nathan Carstens, 160 lb.; Jon McCormick, 195 lb.; and Luke Johnson, 220 lb.  Bulldog conference runner-up finishes included: Austin Ozbun, 98 lb.; Tyler Olsen, 106 lb.; and Donovan Smith, 113 lb.  Other Bulldogs qualifying to the 1-2-3A state wrestling championships include: Bill Medetov, 106 lb.; Luck Broussard, 160 lb.; Ian Johnson, 182 lb.; and Will Olsen, 285 lb.

Junior Luke Johnson recorded pins in each match in the 220 lb. weight class.

 

Other Kenai Peninsula individual champions included: Homer’s Sean Blaine, 98 lb. and Timmy Woo, 138 lb.; Vosnesenka’s Gavril Kalugin, 145 lb.

 

The 1-2-3A ASAA State Wrestling Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 12-13 at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.
