The Borough Assembly discussed a slightly misunderstood topic on “Employee Conduct Requirements To Address The Passage of Ballot Measure No. 2” during their January 6 meeting.
Public comment from residents such as Jason Howard of Soldotna, seemed to focus on the idea that the Borough was making a decision on allowing marijuana use within the Borough alongside the State’s vote to legalize marijuana use in Alaska.
Howard: “I wanted to bring awareness to many different misconceptions because they’re trying to block it from being allowed here or having dispensaries or whatever the case may be and I wanted them to be aware that what they know about cannabis is wrong.”
Mayor Mike Navarre clarified what was really being discussed.
Mayor Navarre: “You know all it does is recognize that marijuana, beginning in February is legal in Alaska and so our code discusses illegal drugs so what it attempts to do and does do in fact is say that even though it is a legal drug just like alcohol is legal, you can’t be impaired in a work place. So its a clarification to make sure that and recognize that the ballot initiative did pass and marijuana will be legal and because of that we needed to change it to make sure we recognize that even though it is a legal drug, you can’t be impaired in the workplace.”
The ordinance to align employee conduct with the new implementations passed unanimously.
