Incoming House Majority Leader Charisse Millett(R) of Anchorage has pre-filed a copycat bill of the famous Erin’s Law.
Pre-filed as House Bill 44, the bill aims to instill a statewide sexual assault prevention curriculum offering age-appropriate personal safety for Alaska’s public schools.
Last year the bill , then known as Senate Bill 216, died in the House Finance committee at the end of April.
Erin Merryn herself came to Alaska last March in an effort to propel the bill into law.
Merryn: “My mission is to put these monsters out of business, and to empower kids with their voice.”
19 states have already passed Erin’s Law, with more than a dozen considering it. The proposal, as explained on Merryn’s website, would: “With respect to the renewal of a Standard Teaching Certificate, provides that continuing professional development activities may include participating in or presenting at in-service training programs on sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention. Provides that the Comprehensive Health Education Program requires age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education in grades Pre-kindergarten through 12 along with training school staff on the prevention of sexual abuse. Effective immediately.”
