The Soldotna City Council will introduce a resolution to officially support the implementation of an Iron Mike Statue in the Soldotna Creek Park.

Local veteran Herb Stettler proposed the placement of the statue during the September 9, 2014 council meeting.

Stettler: “The city came forth and put a nice monument in there its got the three flag poles and its got a pedestal with 5 sides and has all of the 5 branches of the service, so we want to top it off with a real nice statue.”

Iron Mike is a de facto name of monuments honoring service men and women.

Stettler described  described the statue as fashioned after one outside of Fort Bragg, made of bronze, stand about five feet high, weigh nearly a ton and cost approximately $48,000. The Soldotna Veterans of Foreign Wars has deemed a metal sculpture artist in Girdwood would be best.

The resolution to be introduced would simply officialize the city’s support as the resolution states that the VFW is not requesting any financial contributions for the purchase, transportation, or installation of the statue.

That meeting will be at 6 pm, January 14, in the Soldotna City Council Chambers.
