In U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan’s first floor speech today he stuck with a top priority touted throughout his campaign: federal overreach.
During that speech, he asked for his colleagues’ support in a measure that would disarm the Environmental Protection Agency, stating they have no business carrying guns.
U.S. Sen. Sullivan (R-Alaska): “I have worked with many fine federal agents, and I understand the importance of sensible regulations that are based on the directives of Congress. But problems arise when regulations become excessive and big problems arise when regulators are given guns to enforce these regulations.”
Sullivan said the proposed amendment is a response to a 2013 raid by armed agents looking for clean water act violations at mining sites in Alaska’s eastern interior.
At the time of the raids, then-Governor Sean Parnell concluded that no one was intimidated and agents acted appropriately.
The EPA also released a statement at the time saying Alaska State Troopers had advised them there were armed drug traffickers near the Canadian Border.
