The Kenai Spur Highway between Kenai and Soldotna will undergo a pavement preservation project in the spring/summer of 2016.
The Alaska Department of Transportation will focus on the 4.4 miles in Kenai between McKinley St and Cole Dr. Project Manager Morgan Merritt said that will require some lane closures…
Merritt: “Well there would be lane closures while they were milling and paving. There would also be work at the sidewalk ramps which might affect some of the intersections.”
As part of the project, the DOT will also be replacing 90 ramps in the area to meet ADA requirements and two culverts. Merritt promised the culverts won’t be touched during peak salmon season…
Merritt: “We my need to avoid any work at all on the road during the peak of the visitor season, but it does confine the work to later in the year and then we start to run into cold weather problems to complete the pavement and road markings.”
Two culverts will be replaced on either side of Spruce St in Kenai. The Department also hopes to examine culverts near Walmart and the Memorial Park, which will require some City assistance.
The project needs to be finalized this year for construction next year. Planning meetings will be held in March and April.
